Q : Tell us about yourself and what are you passionate about?
'I’m from the Dominican Republic but currently live in Austin, TX. My passion resides in creating homes that are centered around a client’s dream lifestyle. I love architectural details that help elevate a home and add that perfect finishing touch… things like ceiling details, woodwork, paneling, and baseboards – these are wonderful selections that go into a luxurious home design. Outside of work, I love workout competitions. The discipline and mental strength it takes to achieve my physical goals always come with a reward, and I truly love every aspect of this.'

Tatum Madden

'I am from Leander, and I currently live in Austin, TX. I adore designing homes so they are functional for each client, and that differs from client to client. The true challenge is in personalizing their style of home and creating the functionality within that style – from Modern Farmhouse or Mid-Century Modern all the way to updating a Traditional Hill Country Home or a New Build in Hill Country. Outside of work, I love exploring and trying new spots in Austin. I’m also a huge coffee drinker, and I love trying new coffee shops throughout Austin! My current fave find is Cenote off of Cesar Chavez.'

Q : How does art influence your work as a designer?
A : 'Art is often in tune with your design style, and we can help you create a finished space that makes sense with your art. But, it can be different per project. Many of our clients will plan their art collection into their home design from the very start, and if this is the case, we like to take inventory of their art collection from the beginning. We will often take inspiration from those pieces which, in turn, help pull together the entire design. But, oftentimes, art can be the finishing touch that helps pull the whole design together. It helps tell the story in addition to elevating a space.'

Q : How did you discover Julie Ahmad Contemporary Art? Why do you buy original art? What does it mean to you to support a local artist?

A : 'We initially discovered Julie Ahmad Contemporary Art through an advertised event at the SOCO Modern Art Gallery. Our team attended this event and not only fell in love with Julie’s work but also had the pleasure of meeting Julie in person. Our motive behind purchasing original art is the personal feel and touch it has over something in a print or found in a local retail shop. All other finishes and furniture in our designs are curated and very personal to our clients, this is one extra step where we always see the benefit of including in your home design.

We prefer to support local artists and create local relationships. Many of our clients around Austin, TX, are oftentimes more interested in sourcing locally, and they rely on us for this, so it’s important for us to have or create local relationships for our clients. We also are a women-owned, women-run business, and we like to support other women-owned and women-run businesses when we can. When we are looking to build and develop new relationships, this is one of the first things we consider!'

Q : What drew you to these 3 pieces of art that you are using in your design staging?

A : 'Initially the size and colors. The bedroom piece was very much in line with the personality of this client; it’s a piece that felt sassy in a bold yet fun and playful way.

With many masculine furniture silhouettes, soft prints, and natural textures, this was an opportunity to add colorful contrast to a home that is otherwise quite neutral. We were attracted to the vibrant colors featured in these specific pieces.'

No. 5
Q : Is there anything else that you would like to add?

A : 'Julie has been delightful to work with and has been wonderful at communicating. When it came time to help us choose between pieces, she knew immediately how she could help us and sifted through all the options that would work for our client’s specific needs.'

Such a joy collaborating with this superb interior design firm in sharing how much a space is elevated with the implementation of original, local art!
